Getting off the bus

The calves were tired after their very long day of traveling.

It took a bit of coaxing to get them to come down the stairs for the bus (or rather a great deal of pushing as they were unwilling to do it!)

We got them a drink, and gave them bottles before we even took them to their pasture. They seemed much happier just to get there!

We were a bit concerned about one of them that seemed to not be doing well. A call to the man from whom we purchased them from assured us he is just exhausted and would likely be much better in the morning. We were instructed to give them an electrolyte mixture before we went to bed. Justice and the girls said good night to the cows and went to bed.

Even Chris has said he likes the cows and helped to give them electrolyte bottle!

Still working on finalizing names, but so far, the brown and white one is Norman.

  1. You had ONE busy couple of days. Wow, I am impressed with what you were able to get accomplished. So are your bulls neutered? If not, you will really want to get that done as they will vie for dominance. We had three steers when I was growing up and they did well together in the same pasture. But three bulls will not get along. I sure you do well with your new adventure. Keep us posted. It looks very exciting.

  2. They are not yet castrated, and as per the recommendation of the gentleman we got them from, we will be waiting another few weeks before doing it. They need to get over the stress of moving, and get to a point where they are thriving before we traumatize them again!

  4. We can't wait for you to meet them, either, lol! We have some questions about how and where to keep hay and straw, how to feed it to them or rather have it available for them to get at...how to set up their area so they stop stepping in their food and water, how to keep their bedding clean(er)...we'd love to have you over for dinner once you catch your breath from the homestudy!

Also, at what point is the risk of scours past?

  5. The brown one, was the only one I had the desire to name. His name is Norman, based on the movie City Slickers. I even like to do impressions of Billy Crystal while talking to him. :-D
