Getting ready for Spring

Today, we got a great start in the sunshine...we planted tomato, radish, pepper, onion, cauliflower, spinach, carrot, sugar snap pea and broccoli seeds. We now have an entire counter filled up with them!

Then it started raining, so we packed it up, and brought our freshly planted seeds into the house where they will stay warm enough through this early part of spring...then we can plant them in the garden.

Callie enjoyed crawling around outside, sitting in the swing, and seeing what she could climb up on, like this bench. She also took a couple of spills as she learned what was steady enough to support her and what wasn't.

Ashley was so proud of herself and excited to get to write the tags for the bins! She is getting to be such a big girl!

Brianna liked getting dirty! She liked everything having to do with playing in the dirt, filling the bins, making holes for the seeds, putting the seeds in the holes and covering them back up...like I said, she really enjoyed getting dirty!

The twins were running errands with Daddy today. Hopefully by the end of the day, the van will be back in commission!

Today

After school today, the sun decided to show itself for a little bit of time. We decided to take advantage of it by taking the quad out in the pasture, at Breezy's request! Here are some pictures.

Brianna, excitedly waiting for tires to be pumped so she can jump on with me...in her matching outfit. I commented to her on it this morning, telling her you don't normally put plaid with a pattern, but she informed me that "it DOES match, see? There are butterflies on the skirt, AND on the shirt." Who can argue with logic like that?! Certainly not me, at least not on a home day!

The start of my orchard!

We are starting our home orchard with 6 trees. 2 apple trees, 2 pear trees, and 2 plum trees. In talking with the wonderfully informative woman at the nursery, I learned these are the easiest varieties in our area to start with. She taught us what to look for in a healthy young tree, and how to care for them to start with.

Here are some pictures of us planting the trees. My amazing husband dug the holes to get them all planted!

When digging the first hole, Callie crawled up to it and said "Wow. Look at that. It's a hole." And seemed fascinated with it, lol! She also walked back and forth between the wheel barrow handles saying "Look at me, I walking!" She is absolutely LOVING being outside so much! She has been bringing me her AFOs (Braces and shoes) asking for them to be put on so she can play outside.

Pretty Princesses

Here are my girls going to try on dresses for Kaitie's wedding. Ashley and Brianna got the dresses pictured, Anna and Bailey needed to just be sized, and Callie had nothing to try on to even be sized...we are hoping we got the right size for her! Less than 7 weeks until the big day!

Projects

This is the most beautiful I ever remember seeing February. What a blessing that we have had such gorgeous weather! Because of that, we have started many projects around the house and property. Most of them are outside, and a few of them have been completed, at least for now.

We have been busy getting garden space ready for the spring.

We got the back patio cleaned and hosed off.

We started using a compost bin we found on the property. This has been a really big project with lots of research. I had no idea it took such a science to get things to decompose!

We have been cutting things back, weeding, and doing the little odds and ends we find and can figure out how to do. All of this is very new to me. I have never done much with any kind of a garden because of my allergies.

We are researching fruit trees, and trying to figure out a good place to put them.

We have even had enough sun to sun my cloth diapers!

Oh, and lots of running, playing, searching for snakes and bugs, kicking balls around, etc.

All of this on top of our normal school work, keeping up with housework (though we do find this is the one that slips when we spend lots of time outside!), laundry, cooking, feeding the baby, etc that comes from being a homeschooling family with 6 children! What a blessing though that my children all enjoy pitching in to help! (As evidenced by the pictures, the littles making lunch for everyone, Anna cleaning off the patio, and Bailey packing Justice around.)

Time for me to start getting the troops cleaned up so we can get to home church on time tonight!

"Look, Mom, I standing!"

Callie has been working so hard on standing independently. All day long for the last week or so, she has been saying, "Look, Mom, I standing!" as she is pulling away from the couch, or a chair, or whatever she used to stand herself up on. She can stand on things that provide very little support, such as this play table, which slides across the hardwood floor if she pushes very hard. I do not have a great picture of it though...hoping to get one soon!

Callie is also working on standing up in the middle of the floor, but still lacks the balance and/or confidence to make it all the way up. I don't think it will take much longer before she gets it though! She is now consistently standing up unassisted for about 14 seconds at a time. Callie is able to squat and stand back up without any support, too, which is another huge accomplishment!

She is also climbing up on everything she can! Her new fire truck bed, the dinning room chairs, stools, etc. She is even moving stools around the house to climb up where she wants!

Callie is able to walk holding onto things with just one hand, and will now even choose to do so in order to carry her baby, or her red rag, which is acting like a security blanket these days, lol!

It is very exciting to see her progress! We praise God for all of her accomplishments!

We found normal February weather...

Well, today, the sun was hiding behind the rain clouds. We enjoyed this spring preview this week to our fullest potential!

It was nice to have everyone inside again today though! We were able to get extra school done (the girls have a book report fair in a week and a half, which requires a little extra effort for them), we had time to play a new game we got for Christmas, called Qwirkle. It is a really fun! And most of our family is able to play, Breezy and Ashley need a little help for now, but I think Ashley will be able to do it on her own soon. I anticipate it will take Breezy a little longer.

Justice started eating finger foods today. I happen to have some cereal (something we don't normally have), that he was able to eat on his own very well! He really likes eating, so it wasn't a big surprise that he liked it, lol!

Callie has slept most of the day. She is not feeling 100%. She has a croupy sounding cough that is making it difficult for her to sleep through the night...this too shall pass! Breezy has the cough, too, but otherwise is doing just fine.

I think that is everything for now...until next time!

Lovely day for a picnic

Today was yet another beautiful day! We spent the morning getting school done so we could go outside for the afternoon. Here are some pictures from our day.

a sunburn? In February?!

That's right. I have a sunburn - it isn't terrible, but it is there! What a beautiful day! This entire week has been amazingly nice for the first week of February! We spent all day today getting gardens weeded and the dead things from last year taken care of, the area I wanted to reclaim as garden space for my vegetable garden tilled and covered in black plastic, the grass mowed, and general clean up of the yard - just the back yard though, as that was more than enough for a very full day of work!

I would love to show some before and after pictures, but I didn't take any pictures today - too busy and too dirty!

Everyone enjoyed being outside. Justice got to feel the grass, and seems to be the first of my babies to actually like it!

We got everything on my list done today! I just hope and pray my mil is not disappointed or upset by anything we pulled as I do not really know the difference between a week and a plant someone might want to keep!

Another beautiful day!

Today was absolutely beautiful!

I decided after everyone got morning chores done that we NEEDED to be Outside to enjoy it! Everyone had a great time!

While the girls played, I got the blueberry bushes trimmed back...probably not enough, but it is at least a start! They already have buds on them, and I just couldn't get rid of all of them! We can however get between each of the bushes now, and none of the branches are dragging on the ground. I think we are at least close to being able to reach the highest ones, too...like I said, it is a start!

Anna decided she wanted to do some trimming, too! I let her try to free the bell from the vine that had overtaken it...

We used the wagon and walked all the trimming waste to the back of the property. Just as we got there, it started to rain on us! We quickly cleaned up all the tools and toys, got Callie (who had a great time playing outside!), and came in...we turned around at the back door to see the brightest, most amazing double rainbow we could have imagined! We could see both ends of both rainbows, and they were going directly over our property!

We spent more time outside than we intended (I was originally thinking about 1/2 hour so everyone could get their vitamin D)...so hopefully homechurch will be forgiving of the inside of the house :)

Punxsutawney Phil may have seen his shadow a couple days ago (predicting 6 more weeks of winter), but the weather seems to disagree with him! We have been enjoying to sunshine so much! We had nice enough weather to go to the park twice this week! What a blessing to be outdoors in the sunshine, enjoying this world that God has given to us!

Here are some pictures of our day. Highlights of the park trip were Callie playing on the playground by herself! She even walked up a couple of stairs! Justice had his first ride in the swing...and seemed to really enjoy it! Anna got to wear her new cowboy boots and jeans! Ashley enjoyed running and climbing as she played pretend with Brianna. Breezy loved getting to push Justice and Callie in the swing. Bailey liked helping Callie and another 2 year old she met at the park. (Bay later told me she was amazed at how much the other 2 year old could do on her own! Callie has really skewed our idea of 'normal,' lol!) Anna and Callie to got to ride on Mariah, our friend's horse, and Breezy got to ride on Tivo, their pony.

Looking at the pictures, it looks like we all went to the park together - but really, I left Ashley at Choir, and the rest of us walked to the park - then we walked back to choir, traded Ashley for the twins, and went back to the park!

Callie also had a wonderful physical therapy session. We are working more and more on standing balance and more pelvic disassociation (she is getting better and better at both of these!).

All in all, another blessed day!

This is the day the Lord has made

Today has been a good day. I can't help but think no dental appointments has something to do with it, lol!

Here are some of the things the girls have been up to.

Bailey found a quiet place to write and draw.

Anna drew the sunrise she saw this morning.

The littles, playing in the beans.

Callie performing her new accomplishment; climbing up the bunk bed ladder...while this is a huge feat for her to accomplish, it is also a very scary one for me - she is not able to get down! I am afraid she is going to fall one of these times...on the other hand, she is learning to climb at an older age and realizes her limitations. She gets to the top and calls "Help me! I'm stuck! Uh-oh, I'm gonna fall! Please help me!" until someone comes to get her. She is not yet able to get herself onto the top bunk, just up the ladder until she runs out of rungs.

wow - February already?!

February?! How could it possibly be February?! What happen to January? Sigh, time is just going so fast!

We had a great visit with Mom and Dad (Chris' parents) last week. The visit was all too short, and we are all sad that they are on the road again...

Yesterday the twins had a dental appointment to fill a cavity...While they did this:

The 4 littles and I walked to a nearby park to play!

Then we went home and let the twins rest. Neither of them felt like doing much of anything after their appointment. :(
